What is Cloud transformation?

Cloud Transformation may initially seem like a complicated process to get our heads around, but ultimately, it’s about migrating your business online to cloud-based files as opposed to on-premise. You can move everything from emails, files, photos, contacts and procedures to cloud-based storage, meaning that you have more space to archive and less of a need for hundreds of filing cabinets. Having all your data and work in the Cloud transforms the way your business works. Data can be accessed instantly on multiple different devices in various locations.

3 Cloud Strategies

  1. Refactor

Refactoring requires a complete revamp of an application to transport it to the Cloud. It involves breaking up the application into independent services and rearchitecting them to a detailed microservices architecture. This is useful for any business that will benefit from Cloud-native features such as scalability and agility.

It can be the most expensive approach as it involves a large amount of work. However, it is worth bearing in mind that if you don’t do refactoring now, there may come a time in the future where you decide it’s easier and more efficient to use Cloud-native features anyway.

More often than not, the benefits and ease of native features are worth the inconvenience of rearchitecting. Refactoring from the start will allow you to fully optimise your Cloud solutions.

  1. Rehost

The lift & shift method is commonly used by organisations that need to move large-scale applications required for their specific business needs. Rehosting these applications on the Cloud happens without modification. Despite the change being minimal, many organisations choose this strategy as it moves their applications from on-site servers that risk overheating and take up a lot of space, to the Cloud.

It’s worth making sure that the applications you choose to lift & shift are compatible with the Cloud. It’s also useful to remember that rehosting alone is rarely the end of the chapter with Cloud migration.

It’s the cheapest option, but you will only be able to get a taster of the full Cloud optimisation experience. After testing and monitoring, you may discover that you need to re-architect your applications in the Cloud. If this is the case, don’t worry though, it’s often easier to re-architect in the Cloud rather than refactoring your entire system beforehand.

  1. Replatform

Replatforming involves moving applications to the Cloud with very little changes – just a few tweaks here and there to optimise the Cloud functions. This is similar to Rehosting, and quite often takes place after Rehosting. Replatforming allows for changesto be tracked efficiently, for you to establish what capabilities are being helped by the Cloud, and which resources are not performing effectively.

Unlike Refactoring which will only update particular applications, Replatforming will support scalable migration to the Cloud across any application and provider. Even though only small tweaks are taking place, it’s really important to keep a close eye on performance across the board so that you can spot any areas of weakness that need special attention.
